Dofus

The Dofus Tour

Dofus is a brand new MMORPG from France that has been fully released in English on September 1, 2005. We've gathered up tons of information about many aspects of the game, and especially tips for beginners.

We will be updating this guide as we get more information about the different classes, professions, and quests!

Introduction and Getting Started

Dofus is an online MMORPG, originally developed in France and recently released with an English version. It's a unique world with many different classes, professions, and creatures! There are also quests and factions which shape the world, as well as the backstory about the Dofus eggs (which you can find on their site, www.dofus.com).

This is a Flash-based MMORPG, which means you must have Macromedia Flash installed in some form, whether it is a browser plug-in or the standalone Flash Player (both of which are free from Macromedia.com).

You can either run the Dofus.exe (which is the game shortcut placed on your desktop if you are using Windows), or you can run the Flash file in the Dofus directory (in the beta version this was called "loader.swf"). I happen to own Flash Player and I had no problem just launching the Flash file. I actually recommend this, as running the full screen version seems to lose some resolution. Also, there is a Web page option, if you run Dofus.html it will open a Web browser that loads the Flash file. However, IE 6 users will probably experience annoying security messages, so I just recommend getting the Flash Player.

Getting Started

After logging in, you will come to a screen where you can select an existing character or create a new one. You have a maximum of 5 characters per account. When you create the new character, you can mouse over the classes to view their description and spells, give custom colors to the character (colorable parts vary by class), and give your character a name. Once you've finished the creation you are sent back to the character selection screen, where you can choose your new character. See more about classes in the Classes chapter.

The beginning tutorial is very useful in introducing you to the game basics and the interface. Most everything is done with point and click, though there are some keyboard shortcuts as well. The tutorial will tell you about HP/AP/MP and other stats, how to start a fight with a monster, how to move around in battle, cast spells, and upgrade spells as you level.

Go through this tutorial when you first start the game. Even when you make new characters, you should consider going through the tutorial, because you will obtain a few starting pieces of equipment for your character. To speed things up to the part where you start actually killing monsters, you can press the button in the left-hand corner which will prompt you to move to the next scene (this doesn't end the tutorial altogether, but it's nice to be able to move quickly through it). Of course if you don't want to go through the tutorial at all, you can choose the alternate exit from the first screen of the tutorial.

Also don't forget to talk to the NPC in the room off of the regeneration screen - he will teach you how to "sit" and regenerate your HP.

Eventually you will be sent out into the world, where you can really start the game!

Earning Experience and Leveling

This is pretty straightforward. Kill monsters, earn experience. You can also earn experience from quests. Also, notice that putting stat points into Wisdom will increase the amount of experience you get from fights.

When you level up, you will get 5 points to spend on your stats. Keep in mind that for different classes, some points count more or less than others. On the Classes page you will find this info for each class.

You also get a point to spend on upgrading any of your spells. The higher the spell level, the more points it will take to upgrade. You may want to save your points to upgrade a particular spell, or you can spread it out among all of your spells as you progress. You only start with 3 spells, but you will gain a new spell every few levels.

The World

The map of the world is already built into the game, and also marks interest points. It's in grid form, so you will be looking at locations as coordinates. Mousing over a location on the map will show you the coordinates.

Quests

There are a few types of quests in the game. We list them here in general terms. In the Quests chapter we will have a listing of all the quests we know about!

  1. Main quest - this quest is described in the book that is in your inventory. It will likely tell you what you need to be doing.

  2. NPC collection quests - NPCs will often request that you bring them a certain number of resources and they will award you with equipment, parchments (to improve stats), or other items. These are NOT logged anywhere so you will need to keep track yourself (or use our quest guide!)

  3. Emote Quests - The first emote you learn is the "sit" emote, which makes you sit and helps you regenerate HP. There are other emotes in the game that allow you to be more expressive in your role playing!

  4. Faction Quests - eventually you will need to choose a faction. You will notice people with either angel or devil wings. Those represent the two warring factions, and their main cities are on opposite ends of the map.

Professions

There are 30 professions in the game, and you have slots to learn three of them. The catch is that in order to learn an additional profession, your first profession has to level up to 30, which could take a while! So I would suggest that you learn a resource-gathering profession, rather than a resource-using one as your first. That way you can learn a complementary profession that uses the resources you collect.

Read up on individual professions skills and resource lists in other chapters of this guide! Here is the list of professions that we know about so far:

Alchemist Hunter
Axe Smith Jeweler
Baker Lumberjack
Bow Carver Miner
Butcher Shoemaker
Dagger Smith Shovel Smith
Farmer Staff Carver
Fisherman Sword Smith
Fishmonger Tailor
Hammer Smith Wand Carver

Note: Advanced jobs for carvers and smiths allow them to enchant weapons. We'll update this when we find out more information!

Main Quests

You will have a book in your inventory (under the "quests" category) that will give you a small and not very descriptive sentence of your current quest. Here is what we know so far and in order:

"Don't forget to talk to Deneb"
Deneb is at -6,-6 and he wants a Black Tofu Feather. The Black Tofu is level 5, and at the (-2,0) location it spawns with two Level 1 Arachnees, a Level 1 Moskito, and a Level 2 Tofu.

Black Tofu spawn: (-2,0) - (-10,-3)

After this you will need to go to your class temple and talk to the NPC that is in the room with restricted entry for your class. Choose the "Ask about formation" option for quests.

Talk to your class NPC, "Hair sample" quest
The class NPC will tell you to go to the tailor and pick up some scissors at (2,2). Talk to Sosh, who will prompt you about giving you scissors. Just click on the option to give you scissors, and they will appear in your potions inventory (for some reason). You use the scissors to "cut the hair" of players of all the different classes. I found it easiest to drag the scissors to your item bar, select a player, then click the scissors to cut the hair tuft. You can get multiple tufts of a class, but they won't really count. When finished, return to your class NPC.

Talk to your class NPC, flower parts collection quest
Now the class NPC will give you the task of obtaining one evil dandelion stem, one demonic rose petal and one sunflower seed.

Wild Sunflower spawn: (7,8) - (10,8) - (8,6) - (7,5) - (7,4) - (3,6) - (5,0) - (10,8)

Evil Dandelion spawn: (8,7) - (7,6) - (7,5) - (7,4) - (7,8) - (8,9) - (6,5) - (6,7) - (8,3) - (5,0)

Demonic Rose spawn: (7,5) - (7,7) - (7,8) - (6,5) - (6,6) - (6,7) - (8,3) - (5,0)

Talk to your class NPC, fight Bear Man
Defeat Bear Man in Tainela, and bring the scroll that he drops to your class NPC. You need at least 5 players in the fight in order for the scroll to drop. Bear Man is level 20 and summons a Bear to fight with him, but you only need to defeat Bear Man for the fight to be over.

Bear Man spawn: (-4,-5)

Emotes

Emotes

Dofus has several emotes to enhance your interactions with other players. Emotes are obtained through questing. Here you will find where and how to get the different emote commands.

Sit
Bow
Point
Fart
Afraid
Kiss
Rock, Paper, Scissors
Applaud
Wave Goodbye
Angry
Cross Arms

Sit Emote (/sit)

At the end of the tutorial, when you talk to Tarazed, choose “pass the test”. Then answer the questions in this order:

  • No, I refuse.
  • What can I do for you.
  • I ignore him.

You now have the sit emote, which you use to recover your HP.

Bow Emote (/hi)

Your character takes a bow to greet someone. This emote is a reward for finishing the Blacksmith's Dungeon located at (14,20). The key to the dungeon can drop from Dark Miners, Dark Bakers, and Dark Smiths.

Point Emote (/point)

You learn the point emote by activating a "Scroll: Point your Finger". The scroll is a reward for finishing the Pandikaze Dungeon, located at (18,-36). To get in the dungeon you need the Pandikaze Key, which can drop from Pandikaze Ghosts.

Fart Emote (/oups)

You learn this hilarious emote by activating a "Parchment of Wind of Panic". This parchment drops from Crocodyl in the swamp, at (-4,12).

Afraid Emote (/fear)

This emote shows your character crouching and covering his/her hand. Go to (19,24) and you will need to solve the puzzle. Your goal is to reach the small dock on the far left side of the screen. When you step on the left corner of the dock, a platform will rise from the water. Cross to the far left corner as fast as you can, and another platform will rise. Step across into land. The next exit is invisible, but easy to find, so just walk up a bit and you should find it. Enter the temple to find a glowing statue. Click the statue to obtain the emote.

Kiss Emote (/kiss)

First, you need a Crab Pincer, which you can get by killing Crabs in the Harbor area. Once you have one, go to (1,0) and talk to Don Ruann. He has a task for you, he will ask you to get something from the sea, which is the pincer. Give him the pincer (it says grip on the text), then declare yourself ready.

To his first question, answer “Declare this question as stupid.”

To his second question, answer “That depends.”

To his third and final question, answer “According to the day, the context, the couple?”

Now tell him you're ready for the last contest.

Here's the tricky part: now you have to wait until your clock hits midnight. The clock is in the same spot the artwork or compass is showing. When it shows 00:00 (around 7pm EST) talk to Don Ruann again. Pick “Learn the secret” and you will obtain the Kiss emote.

Rock Paper Scissors Emote (/Pfc1 /Pfc2 /Pfc3)

This is a bit of a pickle, so here is a step by step walkthrough for the quest.
  • Kill boars until you get one hazel.
  • Go to the library at (4,1) and buy the book entitled Secrets of the Squirrel Language.
  • Go to (5,21) and talk to Sight Squirrel, who is usually hiding behind trees.
  • In the first question, pick the only answer available. For the second question, pick "Dinnik ik nisitik". The third question only has one answer as well.
  • Give the hazel to the Squirrel to gain Perception (you will see it on your screen) and go to Grizmine at (2,-1) in the second floor of the tavern. Don?t get into a fight or you will lose Perception, and will have to go back, get another hazel and repeat the Squirrel conversation.
  • Play Rock Paper Scissors with Grizmine and win three times in a row. Each game costs 10 kamas but you can?t win without Perception!.

Applaud Emote (/appl)

The applauding animation shows your character clapping his/her hands over his/her head.
To get it, you need to take 9 players with you and solve a puzzle.

Head to (-2,-6). The switch is a cliff nearby, and can be accessed through the cave. However, the person activating the witch will not be able to enter the cave with the rest, so you will need a 10th person to stand on the switch.

There are two rooms to the puzzle. The first room requires 5 people to stand on the switches at the same time while another pulls the lever. In the second room you need 9 people to stand on the switches in a cross pattern (see image) and then pull the lever. This will open the last room, where you will find a statue. Click on it to receive your applause emote.

Wave Goodbye Emote (/bye)

Head to (4,1) with another 6 players. There are three rooms to go through before you can get your emote. In the first room, go down the stairs. In the second room, one person has to stand on each of the six tiles so you can pull the lever. In the third room, one person has to stand on each of the six blank tiles, then you can pull the lever. This opens up the final room, where clicking the glowing statue gives you the wave goodbye emote.

Angry Emote (/appl)

The angry animation shows your character shaking his fist at someone.

Head to (-6,24) with six other players and step on the switch outside the cave. The door closes rather quick, so run to it as soon as it opens.

In the first room, one person must stand on each of the six tiles, then pull the lever. Take note of the position of the tiles, you need it for the second room.
In the second room, you need to repeat the pattern of the first room, with one person on each tile (see image), then pull the lever. The last room has the glowing statue that gives you this emote.

Cross Arms (/cross)

Crossing your arms is another puzzle-solver quest. You will need nine players to go with you.
Go to (10,-24) and stand on the black and white tile to open the entrance to the cave. Inside, you will see a 9x9 grid with some numbers on it. If you?re familiar with Sudoku puzzles, you will recognize one right here. Basically, what you need to do is solve the Sudoku puzzle and have each players stand on each of the tiles where the number 9 would be. Pull the lever, enter the next room and claim your emote from the glowing statue.

If you don?t know how to solve Sudoku puzzles, just look at the image below for the solution.

PVP Alignment

PVP Alignment

When you first begin your adventures in Dofus, your character is neutral. Later on, you can pick to align with one of the existing factions: Bonta (the Angels) or Brakmar (the Devils).

The main purpose of choosing a faction is of course, to engage in PVP combat. Once you pick your alignment, you will be able to attack players of the opposing faction, and even neutral players if you have choose to do so. In each of the main cities there are NPCs that send you on a series of quests that will raise your rank and specialize your combat skills.

The main advantage of picking an alignment is to access the riches of Dofus, be it the access to a certain territory or the use of certain equipment or weapons. Ranks also allow you to access special resources, use certain facilities and pay less taxes.

Factions

There are two main factions in Dofus: Bonta and Brakmar. However, there is a third faction that is only active for testing on the Jiva server, the Sériane.

There really isn't a difference between the two factions, except that they represent good and evil. It's up to you to pick what side you want to be on.
Your rank is represented by wings, which grow bigger as you advance in ranks, and look really cool regardless!

Rank Honor Bonta Brakmar Sériane
1 0
2 500
3 1,500
4 3,000
5 5,000
6 7,500
7 10,000
8 12,500
9 15,000
10 17,500

Honor Points

The distribution of honor points is calculated by teams in proportion to the rank of each player in it. To progress up the ranks quickly, you have to constantly fight and defeat teams with a higher rank than yours. Your team gets extra points if the team rank is lower than the one you just defeated. Defeating lower-ranked teams won?t gain you any points, and you will be risking losing some. To know the rank of your team, just add up the rank of each player.
There is also a bonus for the number of players in a team, so in this case, the more the merrier!

If you decide to attack neutral players, you will be given disgrace points. A single disgrace point will stop your rank progression until you redeem yourself with enough honor points to make up for the disgrace points you had accumulated. Disgrace points also prevent you from using the bank.

Keep in mind, you don't always have to be in PVP mode. In fact, if you deactivate it, you hide your wings. You will seem neutral but still be aligned with the faction of your choice. If someone attacks you while you're not in PVP mode, they won't be awarded any honor or disgrace points.

Territory Defense

The territory defense system allows players from the opposing factions to invade and conquer a village. All the players aligned with both factions will receive a warning when the zones under their control are being attacked, making it easy to assemble an army and deploy troops via the Zaaps conveniently placed in each of the villages.

So what happens in a territory battle? Basically, once a faction defeats the guards of a certain village, the gates open allowing them to invade. Gates remain open for 10 to 20 minutes (depends on the village). After this time has passed, the Prism room door opens and stays open from 5 to 10 minutes. If the Prism is destroyed, the village changes alignment and the guards respawn.

There are six villages to be conquered:

  • Dopeul Village (entrance at -30,-9)
  • Brigand Village (entrance at -19,-23)
  • Feudala (Pandala Island North, entrance at 27,-48 )
  • Akwadala (Pandala Island South, entrance at 21,-26)
  • Aerdala (Pandala Island West, entrance at -19,-32)
  • Terrdala (Pandala Island East entrance at 31,-35)

To become an Alchemist, you will have to run quite a few errands first, but it will be worth it in the end. An Alchemist concocts dyes and all sorts of different potions for healing, forgetting spells, forgetting jobs, recovering energy and even bring ghosts back to life.

Go to (1,31) and talk to Ben Zinn standing on the bridge. Show him the parchment with flower. Receive Exam Request Parchment. Continue discussion.

The examination place is located in the cemetery at (11,16) on the island. The passage to get there is at (12,16). At (11,16) talk to Vid Cheber and show him the signed letter. Learn the job of Alchemist and you will receive your Green Fingers, which allow you to gather materials.

Farmer Profession

The Farmer harvests cereals, grinds them into flour or extracts their seeds and can also make oils.
To become a Farmer, talk to Farle Ingalsse, located on the farm grounds at (5,6), and learn the job of Farmer - it's that simple.
If you talk to him again, he will have a task for you: bring 100 wheat units (not corn, it's a translation error) and you will receive Farle Ingalsse's Scythe, which you can use to harvest once you reach level 13.

Farmer Crushers and Grinders can be found at (5,6), (1,23), (2,25), (7,-25) and (-30,-42).

Fisherman Profession

The Fisherman catches sea and river fishes, and prepares them for cooking.

To become a Fisherman, talk to Bahn Laka located at (9,0) next to the house-boat. He will ask to to bring some baits from Aga Dou within 5 minutes and give you the List of Baits for Bahn Laka. Aga Dou is located at (1,1). Show him the list of charms, and continue discussion. Receive Agadou’s Baits. Take them back to Bahn Laka and learn the job of Fisherman.

The best way to get around the time limit is to buy a recall potion from Ralgout at (-1,9) and then save your position at the harbour zaap located at (7,-4). Accept the quest, run to Aga Dou, use the recall potion to teleport to the zaap, and finally run to Bahn and finish the quest.

Your tool of the trade is, of course, your Fishing Rod, which you have to buy from Bhan. As you level up, you will be able to use better fishing rods with a higher range, which allows you to fish further off the shore.

The Fisherman’s workbenches are located at (9,0) inside the house-boat and inside the house at (14,26). A good way to raise your skill quick is to fish from the Dink Pool, located at (15,25). Although the fish is useless, the probability of catching it is a lot higher.

Should you choose to become a Fisherman, the Fishmonger should be your second job, so you can make use of the fish you catch.

Hunter Profession

The Hunter has a chance of obtaining special items when killing a monster. These will become the ingredients in his recipes.

To become a Hunter, talk to Musa at 1,18. He will then test you to see if you have what it takes to become one, by putting you into a fight with a level 3 Gobbal. You need to kill the Gobbal in less than 2 minutes and then show the Gobbal Leg to Musa.

To hunt, you need to have your hunting knife equipped, otherwise you won’t get the ingredients you need as a drop. To prepare a recipe, you must also have the knife equipped.

The Hunter food preparation table is located at (1,13).

If you become a Hunter, your second choice for a job should be the Butcher so you can use the preserves.

Miner Profession

The Miner goes into the underground mines and digs up metals to use for jewelry (via the Jeweler profession) and weapon crafting (via the various smithing professions). To learn mining, talk to Chipo Atufe in Astrub (9,-23) or to Casper Van Brushing in the building at (-1,5). You will need a pickaxe to mine metals. You can ask Casper about the pickaxes and he will ask you to bring him 10 units of Elm wood in exchange for a pickaxe. Or, you can just buy one from him for 150 kamas (which is MUCH easier, unless you happen to find Elm on a merchant for cheap!).

Miner Polishers and Melters can be found at (-2,-3), (-1,5), (0,33), (3,29) and (7,-20), where you see a cauldron icon on the map.
