The Sims: Superstar

Little Guide to Stardom

Everyone wants to be famous, including a Sim. Superstar introduces a brand new career for your Sims to pursue. A new publication is being delivered to your door along with the daily newspaper, where you can read the names of the Studio Town top 10. Pick up the little tabloid, and find an agent. Then call the cab, and off to Studio Town you go!

Make sure you leave home in a good mood and with all needs fully green (or as close to it as possible). This way you will maximize your time in Studio Town. You are limited to only one visit per day, so you have to make the most of it.

There are several things you can do to be noticed and gain star levels.

However, since you are starting from scratch, you're stuck using the Karaoke Stage or the Open Mic. These require no stars, but are a good way of gaining a couple. The more people listening to you, the better. I find the Karaoke Stage a better way to attract a crowd. You can sing a variety of songs: Country, Dance, Big Band, Ballad and Rock. But that doesn't really matter, as long as your skills are high and you're in a good mood.

You can also bug the Paparazzo to pose for a picture or do a publicity stunt.

Let's go over the star levels and their in-game descriptions first:

  • 0 stars - Nobody
  • 1/2 star - Stepping Stone: Most dogs get treated better than this... and your earning power is about as exciting as your lowly star power... Channel your bitterness and frustrations into your work, so someday... YOU'LL be on top.
  • 1 star - Insider: It's time to leave your delusions behind. This isn't magic... this ISN'T glamour... THIS IS A SYSTEM, and you had better start learning to work it if you want to see the big bucks and your name in lights. Get creative... of they will tell you to get lost.
  • 1.5 stars - Name Dropper: You've arrived... At the understanding that being a star is HARD work! Pump up your body and presentation skills, as you pump palms around Studio Town. Nobody said this would be easy.
  • 2 stars - Studio Fly (Need 2 Starpower): People are talking. Your fan mail is growing! Sure, you're only B-list, but people recognize you on the street, plus it SORT OF feels good to see yourself in the tabloids! In fact, maybe you should look for NEW ways to get famous. Sure it's great to "be discovered," but can you afford to wait?
  • 2.5 stars - Sell Out (Need 4 Starpower): You thought it couldn't happen to you... You were going to make a masterpiece, stick to your friends, and change the system... from the "inside." Think again. Studio Town is nothing more than an unstoppable, unregulated, unthinking, UNFEELING money-making machine. You can't fight it... you can only RIDE it, so hang on!
  • 3 stars - Trendsetter (Need 7 Starpower): Those ridiculous pants you wore last week are hugging every hipster's waist this week! You're an underground smash just WAITING to break out, if only you knew the right people! Separate from the herd, by MAKING yourself heard, by everyone in Studio Town.
  • 3.5 stars - Player (Need 11 Starpower): This is the point at which your fans start getting... obsessive. Just go with it. The more they squawk, the more famous you become. Fan the flames by dropping names, and making sure you get lots of "face time" in Studio Town. Fame... it's the only game in town... STUDIO Town that is!
  • 4 stars - Talk of the Town (Need 14 Starpower): 15 minutes of fame... HA! Magazines, billboards, talk shows... your face is everywhere! But nobody told you it would be so much work! Plus it seems the more money you earn, the more money you burn... Keep your name in lights, or you might find just yourself... a fading star.
  • 4.5 stars - Celebrity (Need 18 Starpower): They say the candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long... and your star has been VERY bright lately. This is the DEFINING moment of your career... will you claw your way to the top to become a TRUE superstar... or just another HAS-BEEN, born to litter the tabloids in a pseudo-celebrity limbo? The choice is up to you.
  • 5 Fame - Superstar: The world... is your OYSTER! Who said it was lonely at the top? You've got more friends and fans than you know what to do with! Sure, you've burned some bridges on the way, but that's the mark of a true artist, nay... A GENIOUS! No wonder they worship the ground you walk on! You DESERVE IT! HOW SWEET IT IS!!! But... will it last?

So what is this Starpower you keep hearing about? That is the number of connections you have that are also stars in Studio Town and it's also based on their star level. Advancing in star levels also requires you to make friends with high-ranking celebrities. You can check the local tabloid to see who's hot and take notes of the names ranking higher on the Top Ten. These are the people you want to make friends with.

Acquiring Starpower isn't an easy thing, especially since you have to keep those friendships active, so I just cheat my way through it by using the Perfect Sim Mirror from Millenium Sims to make friends with everyone and maximize all my skills and personality traits. I highly recommend it!

Now that we understand star levels, let's see what you can do at each stage.

  • 1 Star Activities: Record Jingle
  • 1.5 Star Activities: Photo shoot print ad, TV commercial
  • 2 Star Activities: Model swimwear or winterwear
  • 2.5 Star Activities: TV Inheritance or Emergency Scene
  • 3 Star Activities: Record Rock, Pop or Dance anthem
  • 3.5 Star Activities: Runway fashion show (requires another Sim)
  • 4 Star Activities: Record music video
  • 4.5 Star Activities: Director's stage Fight or Death scene (requires another Sim)

Once you decide to become a star, you will need to go to Studio Town every single day, or you will lose a star level (half a star). So in this aspect, it's kind of like being demoted in a regular Sim job.

Music is the easiest career of all; at least I like to think so. Once you've gained a couple of stars from the Karaoke Stage, you can move on to the Recording Booth and have a little fun recording jingles and songs.

The recording process is a bit like playing Mastermind. You are given three options to choose from, so you have to pick a combination of three. Then you watch the thought bubble above the producer's head to see if you've got then right order: a clear bubble means a yes, a red X bubble means a no.

You will need to get the combination right in three tries, or you'll get reprimended and risk loosing a star level. Here's an example:

  • Pick "Normal Normal Normal". Watch the thought bubbles.
  • If the second and third bubbles have red X, you know the first one is Normal for sure.
  • "Pick Normal, Mellow Mellow". Watch the thought bubbles again.
  • Your result is clear bubble, red X, clear bubble, so now you know your first choice is Normal, the second isn't Mellow, and the third is Mellow.
  • Pick Normal, Over The Top, Mellow. By default, this is your only possible result.

To make it easier:
  1. Pick all Normal.
  2. Replace those that were wrong with Mellow.
  3. Replace those that were wrong Over the Top.

Music videos work in the same way, but they are a lot more fun to watch. So much in fact that sometimes I forget to look at the thought bubbles.

For the music video, you pick your inspiration from Rain, Thunder and Dew. But there's a catch: you only need two of them correct for a successful video.

The process is exactly the same:
  1. Pick all Rain.
  2. Replace those that were wrong with Thunder.
  3. Replace those that were wrong with Dew.

You might not get the perfect video (all three correct answers) assuming all three options are Dew, but at least this is the best way to deduct the right combination and you will still have two correct answers and a decent music video.

Acting begins at the Open Mic and goes on to the several television and movie studios.

Look around the lots for the hospital bed set, as this will be your second acting activity. You can choose to do a commercial or act in the Emergency scene or the Inheritance scene. It's also a pretty funny thing to watch.

The guessing work is just as the music and video recording:
  1. Pick all Comedic.
  2. Replace those that were wrong with Dramatic.
  3. Replace those that were wrong with Suspenseful.

At a higher stardom level, you can act in the big Director's stage with the staircase. You can do a swordfight scene or perform a death scene, but unlike the music videos where you are provided with dancers, these scenes require other Sims to join you, so make sure there are other star-to-be Sims in the lot, or you'll just be wasting time standing there waiting. Once you finally get a co-star, the guessing process begins and you'll be given three choices to act out the scene. You only need to get two out of three correct, but you only have two chances to do so.

Fashion is probably the hardest career for me. I just can't seem to get the runway method right, even though I have a blast watching the Sims dress up as a bee or a carnivore plant!

This career begins at the Photo Shoot set, where you are given three options: shoot an ad, model swimwear or model winterwear. It's a process of trial and error again, guessing the way the photographer wants you to pose.

The guessing work is the same as:

  1. Pick all Energetic.
  2. Replace those that were wrong with Seductive.
  3. Replace those that were wrong with Artistic.

The runway fashion show is a bit more difficult. You need to get two out of three combos right, and you've only got two chances to do it. Pick from Couture (funky outfits with weird hats), Formal (wedding gowns and suits) and Lingerie (sleepwear and underwear) and hopefully you will get at least the acceptable result.

Stardom has its advantages and disadvantages.

The big advantage is that now you can hire your own butler. He's a bit pricey, but you're big and famous now, so you can afford the $500 a day. He's a bit of a mix between Servo and the Maid. He is constantly present, he cooks, he cleans, he calls the Handyman ro repair broken appliances, he waters your plants, dismisses your visitors, even fills your pet's food bowl. The butler is also good to keep the stalker away.

The disavantage of being famous is the crazy obsessed fan that follows you around from your home to Studio Town and back again. This all seems pretty amusing at first, but it gets old fast. The stalker will go as far as leaving black roses at your doorstep and eventually get in the house and steal your awards, without setting the burglar alarm off!

A good defense against this crazy stalker is the butler, who will have no problem in approaching him and smacking him right in the face. A second alternative is to get a dog, which will keep the stalker from entering, but he'll still hang out outside worshiping the ground you step on.

There are 11 different awards that you can bring home to showcase and admire.

Performing exceptionally well in the Acting field can give the Bronze, Silver or Gold Canister.

The Bronze, Silver or Gold Figure are awards given to those who stand out in the Fashion field.

The awards given to those exceeding in the Music field are the Bronze, Silver and Gold Twang.

Being famous and getting along with your fans can also grant you awards, respectively the Simmy and the Sim Choice Award. A Sim Marilyn Monroe will come to your door to give you these.

Awards can be proudly showcased on the appropriate stylish black cabinet. But now that you've won some awards, you have to deal with your crazy stalker trying to steal them.

As a last resource for preventing theft, you can use the Zeddy-Lock Celebrity Security Door, which will only allow celebrities (you!) to go to through it, and place your award cabinet in a room which only access will be this door. The stalker will still come in the house and stare at the door, but at least he won't take anything.

So there you have it. Now that you're famous, have a butler to do everything for you, an obsessed fan who tries to steal your awards and people stopping at your door screaming and cheering... how do you feel?
