The Witcher

Game Guide and Walkthrough

From our review:

"Choices. Your path is full of them, but it's never clear on what exactly is good or evil. All you know is that you're a mutant, a monster slayer, and little else. It's up to you to kill the werewolf who feeds on rapists and murderers, or you can choose to find him a cure. It's up to you to side with the Scoia'tel or the Order. Your actions affect how certain key people will react, and picking sides will be inevitable at times."

WALKTHROUGH - PROLOGUE

The first portion of the prologue is pretty straightforward. Pick up the sword from the training dummy and start swinging. Remember the game uses a timed click combat system, so pay attention to the little sword icon changes to know when to chain your attacks. Tutorial windows will pop up to tell you what to do as well.

As soon as you can, go into options and make sure you turn show items names on, so you don't miss anything that can be inspected. After the initial group of bandits is dead, follow your fellow witchers up the stairs.

After the scene, you are on your own. You will learn about the different combat styles as you go, so change them accordingly to what you are fighting. Again, there's really only one way to go, so follow the bandit trail up the courtyard, onto the wall and towards an area with several archers near a siege cauldron. There will be a scene here where Geralt goes up the spiral staircase.

There will be some more fighting on the upper courtyard. Make your way to the gate and click on the turnstile to open it and let everyone else in. Vesemir gives you a Swallow and a Thunderbolt potion. Drink the Thunderbolt before talking to Leo to go inside.

Inside Kaer Morhen, keep following Leo and you will learn the third fighting style. Group fighting is great, especially later on in the game, so remember to develop that skill too. Keep following Leo until you reach the lab. After the scene, follow him again to the circle of stones and click on it to learn Aard - your knockback sign. Click it again to get a booster. Go back to where you came from and use it on the rocks to clear the way out by clicking the right mouse button.

Back outside, after the scene it's time to choose who you're helping. If you go with Triss, you go back to the lab and fight the mage. If you stay with Vesemir, you get to fight the Frightener.

If you go with Triss:
Savolla's battle takes place inside a force field. First, there are a few bandits to get rid of. As for the mage, he teleports, so the best way to catch him is to cast Aard as soon as he materializes and then beat the crap out of him with your strong style. Triss also gives you an energy regeneration potion, so you can use the sign more often.

If you go with Vesemir:
First clear the bandits, then your job is to hit both siege cauldrons with Aard and ring the bell. Making noise stuns the Frightener, which means you can hit it for a while while the three items are making noise. You will have to do this a few times, back and forth from the cauldrons to the bell, to the beast.

No matter what you choose, Triss ends up hurt. Vesemir will tell you about meditation. You can only do it by the fire, and you use a flint to light it up. Meditating lets you rest and access the character development sheet where you use talents to improve your skills and attributes after leveling up. Click on the hourglass to meditate when done.

The next step is to find the ingredients to make a potion to heal Triss. Talk to Lambert. There should be some left around the castle, so it's time to look around. Go through the kitchen and head up the stairs to the upper floor. There will be more bandits to fight and a few things to inspect. Make sure you don't miss a thing. When you have cleared the top floor and found all ingredients, go back downstairs and talk to Lambert to get a recipe for the potion for Triss. Talk to Vesemir again to receive a new armor and sword, your medallion, celandine and a scroll. Read the scroll. Talk to Eskel as well (pretty much talk to everyone about everything to get more entries in your journal).

Go outside and click on the Frightener's corpse to get what you need. Go back inside and meditate by the fire. Go into the alchemy menu and double-click the recipe Potion for Triss (or click mix below the ingredients) to make it. Click on the hourglass to meditate when done.

Triss is now resting in her room. Go to the upper floor and there will be a passage to get there (this is why you should have show all items turned on, you will see the door right away). Click on her and the "give gift" option will appear. Drag the potion to the hand icon to give it to her, then have a little chat. Depending on who you helped before, the dialog will be different, but you get to sleep with her either way.

You can also go to the armory and talk to Eskel to learn about fistfighting. Tell Triss you're ready to go and you will attend Leo's funeral and leave to the Outskirts of Vizima.

Checklist:

Books: The Book of the Swallow, Frightener's Vision, Monstrum, or, a Portrayal of Witchers

Cards: Triss

WALKTHROUGH - CHAPTER 1

Once you have control of Geralt, a bunch of barghests will appear by the gate. Kill them all and talk to Shani. Your next hint is to find the Reverend. Go to the inn and grab all the notes from the notice board. Inside, you can store your belongings with the Inkeeper and meet a bunch of colorful characters. The Antiquary sells books, Vesna has food and drink, you can alsochallenge Fat Fred and others for a fistfight. There is also a drunkard that you can beat in a drinking contest (about 5 weak drinks will do) to win a book about ghouls and graveirs. Outside, the dwarven blacksmith will sell you a Cinfrid Oil recipe for 35 orens.

Make your way north towards the cluster of houses and find the Reverend. If it's nighttime, he will be in his house, in bed. During daytime, he is outside the church. He gives you five candles and tells you to light the five shrines in the area. You must do this at night, and every time you approach one, some barghests will appear. To place a candle on the shrine, click the shrine and use the hand icon as if you were giving a gift. Make sure you talk to the Royal Huntsman when you see him, he mentions a monster in the river.

Since the whole process had to effect, go back to the Reverend and let him know. He sends you to talk to the witch, Abigail. Talk to him about the Salamandra. You must gain the trust of three people, Odo, Mikul and Haren, before you gain his trust and tells you what you need to know. He gives you a ring, equip it so you can show it to these people when you see them.

Abigail's hut is near the inn, so go back and have a chat with her. If you have the ten barghest skulls for the contract, talk to her about it for your reward. Any extras you can sell to her. She has another task for you, get five white myrtle petals. To be able to pick herbs you need to put a bronze talent in Herbalism and read the book Field Plants to recognize them. If you don't want to wait to level up and get a talent, you can buy them from the Herbalist outside the inn. Come back with the white myrtle and leave Abigail alone while she makes a potion.

Leuvaarden at the inn also has a quest for you, find out what happened to his missing friend in the cave across the river, left of the mill. There are Echinops inside and you can't see a thing, so use a Cat potion. You will find some human remains on the Sated Echinops. Go back to Leuvaarden and tell him what you found. Now you need to put the late friend to rest, and you can only do this if you have lit the five shrines. Talk to the Reverend about burrying the remains, and he says you can go to the church basement and place them in the sarcophagus. Go inside, down the stairs and do just that. The King of the Wild Hunt appears and after the conversation you fight Leo's ghost. Go back to the inn to get your reward from Leuvaarden.

If you talked to Vesna before, you will find her being attacked by bandits. Help her out and then escort her home (near the Reverend's). She will tell you to meet her at the mill at dusk and bring some wine. While you're here, go towards the bridge, turn right down to the river shore and kill the drowners until you have three brains for the Reverend's contract. You might also find the named drowner, Nadir, it drops the head for the Royal Huntsman's quest - if not, it's on the other side of the river, by the mill. Drowners only appear at night.

Keep going along the river until you get a scene wher a dwarf is being harassed by bandits. Help him out, since as it turns out, he is your friend. Some of the bandits will drop dice sets that allow you to play dice poker with NPCs who also play. Talk to Zoltan any time at the inn to learn the basics and play a game with him. You can also play a drinking game, it takes 7 weak drinks to win a diamond from him.

Go into Haren's house (facing the river) and show him the ring, otherwise he won't talk to you. He asks you to kill some drowners by the river, east of his house. Kill the eight drowners and you will see some elves and dwarves appear. The Scoia'tel want Haren's cargo and you can either kill them or let them take it.

If you kill them, Vivaldi will be arrested in Chapter 2 and you have to bail him out. If you let them go, Coleman (the Fisstech seller) will be dead. Whatever your decision, go back to Haren and finish your quest. If you talked to Zoltan at the inn and learned the basics of dice poker, tell Haren Zoltan sent you to play against him. You can also meditate there.

Go to the Vizima gate during the day and talk to Mikul by showing him the ring. He wants you to kill the ghouls in the crypt, so that will open the entrance, but you need to go in at night. Inside, you will find a dead girl holding a glass vial. Take it with you. Kill all the ghouls inside, and you should obtain the three ghoul blood for Kalkstein's contract. You will also find the Igni sign. Go back out to Mikul for a battle on the bridge. When you go back to the crypt, the blockage has been cleared and you can go further in. There are a few walls that can be broken, and behind one there's a larger ghoul, Ozzrel. Take this head to the Royal Huntsman for another reward and return to Mikul. Talk to him again to find out he also used to play dice. Tell him Zoltan sent you and he will play. He also gives you a package to deliver at the Hairy Bear Inn in Vizima.

You've wasted more than enough time for Abigail to make the potion, so go back and talk to her. Alvin will make a few revelations and Abigail will give you Berengar's notes.

Go west from the inn to find Odo's house. Show him the ring and he will have a few drinks and ask for your help with his garden. It turns out you're too drunk to walk, let alone fight, after this conversation, so just walk away from his house and the Echinops and meditate at the nearest campfire. You will probably have to fight a few barghests, but they're not a big deal when drunk. Meditate for an hour and go back to Odo's house to kill the two Echinops. Use Igni on them and keep chaining your attacks. Go back inside to claim your reward. If you mention Zoltan sent you, you can also play dice with Odo.

And now that you've earned all three men's trust, go back to the Reverend. He tells you where the Salamandra hideout is, and that you must get a key from Olaf, the innkeeper. Go back to the inn to find a dead Olaf and Shani surrounded by bandits. Help her out and loot the key. Go to the hideout, one of the locked houses on the way to the cave and get ready to fight some more. When you're done, go through the trapdoor.

In the cave, you need to kill yet more bandits and save the children. Use Aard on the wall near Alvin to go on and you will find Abigail on the other side. You can get to know her better to get her card. Once you walk outside, you are confronted by the villagers, who want her killed. It's up to you to judge her actions. If you find her innocent, you will fight the villagers and Abigail will help you against the Beast. You will also see her again in Chapter 4 as the Murky Waters healer. If you take the villagers' side, they will kill her and fight the Beast with you.

The Beast appears with a few Barghests, not a big deal. Use group style to get rid of them, then switch to strong to kill the Beast. You will get a Letter of Safe Conduct so you can enter Vizima. Before you go, talk to Shani at the inn, then head to the gate by the mill. Mikul turns you over to the guards.

WALKTHROUGH - CHAPTER 2

Talk to the elf and play a game of dice. Vincent will appear and explain how you can earn your freedom. You have to win a fist fight against another prisoner. Talk to Vincent again when you're done, and Jethro will give you a silver sword and two potions (Cat and Blizzard).

Go through the floor grate to the sewers. You will meet Siegfried, who is also hunting the cockatrice. You can choose to let him join you (and then later he will give you access to the Dike) or go on your own (and you will find him guarding the hospital). Let him come along, since he holds a torch and that saves you a potion. Ask him about cockatrices to get new journal entries.

Follow the map and go to the cockatrice's nest. Use fast style and Aard when it's about to strike you. You get a trophy head and a Sephirah. Follow Siegfried to the exit and receive a key. Open the gate and some bandits will attack you. Talk to Siegfried again and leave to the Temple Quarter.

The dectective Siegfried mentioned lives just as you come up the stairs from the sewers. Go inside and talk to him. You have to pay 100 orens to hear what he has to say. You can rest here. When you leave, you are attacked by a group of bandits.

Walking around outside between the dike gate and Raymond's house (daytime only) there is a woman named Gossip. Talk to her, seems she's heard a lot of rumors about this witcher guy and is very interested in getting to know him better. Bring her a pair of gloves to get her card.

Talk to Bootblack and pay him to shine your shoes. You can ask him a bunch of questions about Vizima.

Go straight across from Raymond's House and down some stairs to the slums, where you will find the Hairy Bear Inn and a notice board. Pick up the contracts, and leave your belongings with the inkeeper, since you have to go back for your old things in the jail. Go to the back room to find Rammsmeat and Coleman (if you killed the elves taking Haren's cargo). Talk to Coleman to learn about Fisstech, and have a chat with Rammsmeat. They will only be there at night. Talk to Butter Bean about fist fighting, 75 orens to participate. You can pick one from three rewards: a golden necklace, 150 orens or two bottles of Mandrake Cordial.

Walk past the Hospital area, towards the jail. In your way, you will find Thaler's house. Go inside and talk to him about Berengar's sword and belongings. Ask if he plays poker to advance that quest. In the jail, talk to Vincent and hand in the cockatrice head. Talk to Jethro and take your things from the depository. You will also get a Svarog Rune Stone. Talk to Jethro again about the Salamandra and something missing from your things. You get a quest to bring back some Fisstech to Jethro, and learn about the Hairy Bear and Golan Vivaldi.

Since you have your things back, go to the Hairy Bear and talk to the inkeeper about Haren's parcel. Talk to Coleman in the back room about the lost parcel. Ask if he needs a witcher, and he will send you to a house near the dike gate. Buy some Fisstech from him for Jethro. If you didn't kill the elves, this quest will be available from Conrad, who also hangs out in the inn at night, and wants you to get some wine from that house's basement. There's a Gambler that will tell you more about the silver sword and tells you to talk to the Gardener, you can play dice poker with him. Talk to Munro Buys, he also plays dice and happens to be one of the people you must beat in a game.

Talk to Carmen outside the Eager Thighs Brothel, she needs some help with some men harassing her girls. You can also play dice poker with her, but she's not one of the professionals. At night, you will find the prostitutes being harassed by the bandits. There will be red markers on your map to show you where to go: the first one is near the hospital, another is by Vivaldi's house, the third in the market square. Return to Carmen for your reward. If you refuse the money, then you can bring the girls some flowers to enjoy their services.

Go to the house by the dike entrance at night. There will be two wraiths inside (if you're doing Coleman's quest) or four graveirs in the basement (if you got Conrad's quest). Complete the quest and return to the Hairy Bear for your reward.

Talk to the gravedigger outside the cemetery gates during the day. Talk to Hilldegard Zollstock, she is usually near the cemetary at noon. She's being haunted by her husband. Go to the cemetery at midnight to find the ghost and kill it. Find her again for your reward.

You should see Zoltan Chivay walking around, talk to him when you do. Ask about other poker players, work (will tell you where Leuvaarden is) and Vivaldi. Ask him if he has a minute to listen to some interesting philosophical dialog. Go to the hospital and talk to the Gardener outside to learn more about the silver sword. You can give him food in exchange for some roses. Give the roses to any of Carmen's girls to get their card.

Take the Fisstech to Jethro (if you can't buy it, you should have looted some from bandits), and he will tell you about a prisoner that was taken to the hospital. Go to the hospital sometime after 10pm, talk to the prisoner and Rammsmeat's men will appear and attack you. Get rid of them, return to Raymond Maarloeve and compare notes.

Make sure you have all the contracts and activate their quests. Go to the dike and talk to Leuvaarden. You can let him know about his friend's remains, and see what work he has for you. As it turns out, he needs you to kill some drowners in the swamp. Talk to the ferry man and cross over. Kill drowners at night near the dock, and return to Leuvaarden for your reward.

Go back to the swamp. Talk to Gramps and escort him to the Clay Pits and then to the Melitele shrine. You will be able to visit him and meditate at the hut later. Go to the Brickmakers Village and talk to Vaska to know more about Berengar She will also tell you about the Golem and asks you to clear the Clay Pits of any drowers. Go back to the Clay Pits and take them out to receive a Sephirah as reward.

For The Sentry (Golem) quest, you need to get a lightning rod, so go back to the Temple Quarter and talk to either the Dwarven Blacksmith or the Order Armorer about making one. Leave the area and come back to pick up the rod. Now you need a lightning storm. Go back to the swamp and talk to the Elder Druid in the Druid Grove, he will do it for 500 orens. Go to the Golem Cemetery and place the rod on the Golem. The lightning will wake it up.

You don't really need to engage in battle with it, all you have to do is run around on the outside of the three pillars, activate two, run to the third and lure the Golem. Once he steps inside of the triagle area between the pillars, activate the third and it will strike it. Do it three times to kill it. You will receive a Golem Obsidian Heart and another Sephirah from the corpse.

All the Sephirah you've been collecting are for Kalkstein's quest A Mysterious Tower. You will need to find ten to open the tower in the swamp. Here's how:
- At the beginning of this quest, Kalkstein gives you Chocc'mah.
- You have already found Maal'kad on the Cockatrice in the sewers.
- Vaska gives you Kezath once you have cleared the Clay Pits.
- Neh'tza comes from killing the Golem in the Swamp.
- Leuvaarden will sell you Tipperath.
- Y'esath is in the cave in the Swamp.
- Raymond Maarloeve gives you Keth'aar after you've done the autopsy.
- Ghe'vrath, Oth and Veen'ah can be obtained from leaving a fruit, a flower and a plant at Melitele's shrine in the hospital.

Under construction!

METEORITES, RUNES AND FORGING NEW SWORDS

Blacksmiths will use Meteorite and Runes to forge new swords. Depending on what you have in your inventory, the possible sword combinations will appear in the blacksmith's or armorer's "store". You will still have to pay for the item to be forged though.

Keep in mind, Meteorite Swords are effective on humanoids, while Rune Swords are best for fighting monsters.

BOOKS AND SCROLLS

Books and scrolls are essential to the game progression. Every book you read adds one or several entries to your journal, be it about history, events, places, races, monsters, ingredients and even formulas.

Needless to say, you need to find key books if you want to complete certain quests, because you can't get a cockatrice feather until you learn about cockatrices. You can't pick herbs until you learn the Herbalism talent, and you can't pick all plants right away until you read about the types of plants growing in certain areas. You can't do an autopsy without reading about medicine first, and you won't have all potions formulas available until you know their formulas.

With that said, here are the useful books.

Note: If you drop a Bronze talent point in Monster Lore, these will be added to your journal: Barghest, Ghoul, Graveir, Beast Fangs, Death Dust, Ectoplasm and White Vinegar.

Jump to: Prologue - Chapter 1 - Chapter 2 - Chapter 3 - Chapter 4 - Chapter 5 - Price of Neutrality - Side Effects

PROLOGUE

Triss Merigold #1

After you make and give her the Potion for Triss, talk to her and choose to stay for a while or something about the past (the dialog is different depending on if you protected the lab or fought the Frightener).

CHAPTER 1

Abigail

When you find her in the cave, you can get to know her better.

If you save her from the villagers, Geralt will also remind her of this private moment when they meet again in Chapter 4.
Vesna Hood

You will see her fighting some bandits at night, outside the gate. She will ask you to escort her home (near the Reverend's house), and ask how to repay you. Reply "Shall we meet again?" and she will tell you to meet her at the mill after dusk (19:00) and bring some wine.
Peasant Woman

A peasant woman in a green dress walking around the village will say a traveler once showered her with flowers. There is a townswoman in a white dress in one of the houses by the bridge, who will give you tulips if you bring her a bouquet of other flowers (buy daisies for 10 orens from the Viziman herbalist). There is also a corpse on the way to the cave that has a bouquet of tulips on it. Give the tulips to the peasant girl and pick "Lets find someplace more befitting of your beauty" in the dialog.

Note: She will be listed in the Characters as People of the Outskirts.

CHAPTER 2

Prostitutes

You can either pay them, or you can do Carmen's Working Girls quest and just bring them flowers in exchange for their services. You can get roses from the Gardener by giving him some food.

Note: All of them have the same card.
Gossip

She walks around near the detective's house during the day. You will have to go through the dialog options and eventually find out you need to bring her some gloves or a precious stone.

Note: She appears in the Characters list as Poor Townsfolk.
Shani #1

After the party at Shani's place and sobering up, talk to her about the battle, then come back with some red roses (get them from the gardener by the hospital).
Morenn

You can find Morenn the Dryad at the Druid's Grove in the swamp. First get The Lost Lamb quest from Vaska, then bring Morenn a wolf pelt and in the dialog options there will be something about relieving stress.

CHAPTER 3

Triss Merigold #2

If you chose to take Alvin to her, she will ask you for a symbolic gift. Bring her a silver ruby ring. The first one you can find is in Chapter 1, in a cupboard in Odo's house.
Shani #2

If you chose to take Alvin to her, she will want some proof of your dedication. Bring her a silver amber ring.
Rosalind Pankiera

You can get it when you try to retrieve Dandelion's lute. To go upstairs, you have to fight or bribe her father. Your dialog should go: "That's why I'm here", 'We settled matters", "If you give up the lute", "I would stop short of the marriage", "Can I cheer you up?" and "Causes a slight tingling".
Town Clerk

Find the town clerks in the Town Hall, take the overpass to the bank. Talk to them until you find one where one of the dialog options says "You're a naughty girl". Give her a diamond.

Note: She appears in the Characters list under Clerks.
Noblewoman

She roams around the bank at night and wants a silk scarf. There is also another one who asks for a Kikimore Claw.

Note: Both women have the same card.
Adda

During the party. She wants her favorite dish, Triss can summon it for you. She will tell you to follow her to her room and orders you to undress. Her wish is your command.
Courtesan

There's one outside the New Nakarot inn. She wants 500 orens, perfume or a precious gem.

Note: All courtesans have the same card, which is the same as Blue Eyes'.
Blue Eyes

In the House of the Night. Pay her 500 orens or bring a sapphire, you need to do this anyway to complete a quest.

Note: The card is the same as the Courtesan, but she has her own Character entry.
Vampires

In the House of the Night. Bribe the bouncer to go upstairs and choose to spend the night with the Sisters of Mercy. You will get into a fight with the Order shortly after.

CHAPTER 4

Elf Woman

She is inside the cave by the lake with the other starving elves, but has one hell of a temper. Give her some food (a good item, like a sandwich or a mutton leg).

Note: Character entry appears as Elves of Murky Waters.
Lady of the Lake

After listening to the Hermit's Holy Grail stories, go back to the Lady and tell her "I've had a revelation and wish to embark on a mission...". On the next dialog option, choose "I jest".
Coming soon!
Peasant Woman
