When I first came across Cinema Tycoon Gold, I was reluctant (yes, I actually had my doubts about a tycoon game) to play it. I was afraid it would turn out like Coffee Tycoon and bore the hell out of me. Fortunately, it didn't.

The game will require you to apply all your knowledge of business and advertising strategy to turn your insignificant theatre into the ultimate Mega-Plex.

In order to do this, you will need to manage a whole bunch of things:

  • pick the movies that are hot at the time (watch the symbols, they're not always the same) and make sure you pick another once its viewing time is up;
  • adjust ticket prices for children, adults and seniors;
  • train your staff to have everything run smoothly;
  • invest in a better projector, so you can have more movie choices early in the game;
  • buy upgrades such as a coffee shop that manages its own restocking, an arcade, better sound system, more and better seats and additional screening rooms;
  • watch the news titles to see what goes wrong and fix it.

Unfortunately, a bit more could have been done regarding fixing problems in your theatre. Sometimes in the news titles, an incident will occur. For example, the food in your restaurant goes bad or your projector breaks. Getting things back to normal will require a simple click on the icon next to that news title. This is an aspect of the game that would have benefit from some strategy and planning gameplay.

Aside from all the upgrades, you can also run certain promotions, like a movie premiere, ladies night, 2 for 1 tickets or seniors come free. Actually, the latter was one of my favorites and a very efficient promo too. There are options for advertising as well, from flyers to TV ads.

All these options will obviously add to the daily total running cost of your movie theatre, so make sure your profits can support it.

More strategy and less gameplay, that's how Cinema Tycoon Gold really could be presented. It all comes down to picking an efficient strategy (movies that are hot, upgrades, add-ons, staff training) and just hit the "start" and "skip" buttons to begin and end a business day.

At least, unlike Coffee Tycoon, there is a lot more to manage and many more options to customize your movie theater, and you actually get to watch people line up at the ticket booth, buying snacks and filling the seats in the audience. However, the frame rate was pretty bad, and my computer experienced some horrible slowdowns after exiting the game.

If you enjoy tycoon and management games, then you might want to give Cinema Tycoon Gold a try, so go ahead and download the 60-minute trial at the official Tik Games website.

In the meantime, I'll be leading my Didiplex (go ahead and laugh, I am!) to the highest popularity rank with my magic tycoon finger. See you in the competition!
